London-based charity RefuAid works tirelessly to help refugees rebuild their lives through three core programmes. However, as Ilaria, Head of Language Programmes, explained in our latest podcast, refugees face immense challenges which RefuAid strives to overcome with limited resources.
Being able to access a good English language programme is crucial, especially as many refugees lack even basic skills upon arrival. Sadly, waiting lists for free English classes are long, leaving refugees isolated for months without support. Ilaria witnessed this firsthand volunteering in hotels housing asylum seekers. Many older refugees had no English, and struggled to even accomplish daily tasks. While RefuAid accepts only B1-level clients, they refer those of a lower level to other providers; demand, though, far exceeds availability.
A further criteria that RefuAid has is that they only accept those who have a clear career path such as doctors, engineers, and lawyers. But even these clients have their difficulties as they often face huge financial barriers in order to requalify in the UK. Exams and courses can cost thousands, out of reach for most, and this is where RefuAid’s partnerships with language providers, both schools and individual teachers can really help. This support is then backed up with a loan scheme and together, they have empowered over 160 medical workers to pursue registration through exams such as the OET.
Despite challenges, success stories give hope. Ilaria shared Syrian doctor Iman's journey. After language classes through Refugee Aid, Iman passed the OET and borrowed funds to complete registration as a vascular surgeon. He now earns just under £60,000 annually at an NHS hospital, having repaid his loan - a testament to RefuAid;s life-changing impact. Stories like Iman's show how RefuAid transforms lives through dedicated support of refugees pursuing their professions in the UK.
